All fun and games
until someone gets hurt
played well and badly
both without thinking
Manipulations and machinations
taking turns
roll of the dice
chance or choice
Everybody plays
some better than others
winners losers
no in between
twists turns
always something new
questions no answers
just games
Every day starts anew
begin again
all fun and games
until someone gets hurt

Day has arrived
in all its glory
time to be merry
or that’s the story
Presents are opened
stockings taken down
only smiles in sight
never a frown
Dinner is served
eaten in full
nap on the couch
that seems to be the rule
One day a year
to be merry it seems
filled with food
laughter and dreams
Maybe being merry
should be every day
wouldn’t the world
be better off that way

Day before the day
anticipation in full
waiting on Santa
the sleigh to pull
Hours tick by slowly
each one counted out
closer to Christmas
building to a shout
Presents that mock us
all around the tree
seemingly screaming
open me open me
No matter the age
kids still await
Christmas morning
to learn their gift fate
Day before the day
waiting for it to leave
the longest day of all
happy Christmas Eve!

Time now to rest
break from the quest
enjoy down time
write a little rhyme
No work no school no stress
forget about the mess
movies books long cat naps
some hot chocolate perhaps
Fuzzy pajamas toasty warm slippers
TV and DVD flippers
Christmas tree lights aglow
presents lined up in a row
Time to relax just chill
books to read still
Christmas break is the best
now it is time to rest

Such a sap
cry so easy
with every holiday
commercial
Each song
and scene
bringing tears
back again
Tender heart
soft soul
spirit open
emotions broken
Such a sap
little things
touch the heart
tears fall
CocaCola bears
Apple Christmas videos
stories of magical
holiday cheer
Music plays
scenes fill the screen
once again
such a sap

From far away
it seems okay
but up close it’s
a big old mess
Lives of others seem
from far away
much more perfect
than is true
From afar they appear
beautifully put together
something to be
envied
Closer inspection reveals
true brush strokes
mashed together
and messy
Even closer looks
become blurs of
noise and color
and truth
Perfect from afar
others lives but
up close just a
full on Monet

Staying only a while
short brief fleeting
here then gone
forever moving
Past long gone
future not arrived
present counted in
only seconds

Each one small
gone in a blink
wasted on so much
frivolity
Once gone
never to return
lost in the sea
of what was
attend to the
here and now
before it is
lost and forgotten
Once gone it
can never be
repeated
time

Unable to help
or make things better
sometimes there’s just
nothing
Pain so great
depression so real
unable to stop
the way you feel
Try to help
there to listen
the wall is too high
something is missing
No sound
but the weight
is deafening
Unable to stop
the inevitable train
when at last
she gives in to pain

Rushing to and fro
unsure which way to go
always running this time of year
looking for Christmas cheer
Take some time slow it down
before smiles become frowns
stress isn’t healthy it’s true
rushing is no good for you

Not what you think
no terror involved
no pain or anger
screams of the happy
Like a boiling pot
not of toil or trouble
or any witches brew
just happy bubbles
Like happy magic
constantly heard
it never stops
this happy
Today tomorrow
same it will be
thrilling ecstatic
inside screams
Maybe they spill out
for all to hear
but I won’t care
happy screams here
